Position Summary:
The Head of Middle School is responsible for oversight of the Middle School academic program, curriculum and all aspects of Middle School student life. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Head of Middle School works closely with other administrators to maintain NCDS’ standards of academic excellence and commitment to the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools. The Head of Middle School works closely with faculty, staff, and parents to ensure responsiveness to the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students in the Middle School of NCDS.
Reports to: Associate Head of School for Academics 1
Supervises: Assistant Head of Middle School, Middle School Lead Teachers, Director of Middle School DEI, Director of Middle School Campus Ministry, Middle School Psychologist, Middle School Learning Specialist, Middle School Administrative Assistant, Middle School Faculty, After-School Program Director.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Educational Leadership of the Middle School
○ Serves as the educational leader of the Middle School, developing and maintaining a culture and educational program that is known for its excellence, inclusivity, and innovation.
○ Manages the daily operations and functions of the Middle School in accordance with established policies and procedures and the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.
○ Works closely with the Academic Council in providing leadership in the development and integration of middle school curriculum across different subject areas.
○ Promotes and oversees the development of new curriculum initiatives that promote innovative pathways to learning and effective teaching strategies in collaboration with the Academic Council, Department Chairs and Instructional Coach.
○ Collaborates with the Assistant Head of School, the Assistant Head of Middle School, Department Chairs, and Middle School faculty to ensure responsiveness to the challenges and opportunities of the Middle School.
○ Provides visibility and presence in all areas of the Middle School fostering a positive and inclusive school culture that promotes equity and life-long learning.
○ Uses current research and data to inform instructional practices and curriculum programming and adjustments.
○ Develops and nurtures positive relationships and communication with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.
○ Advances NCDS’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, in collaboration with the Middle School Director of Diversity.
○ Manages the appropriate budgets related to Middle School educational activities and experiential learning, and allocates resources effectively to support academic programs.
○ Collaborates with Department Chairs to make annual recommendations of teaching assignments.
○ Collaborates with Senior Leadership and Department Chairs in hiring new Middle School personnel.
2. Middle School Faculty
○ Serves as a member of the Middle School Faculty assuming responsibility for teaching one year-long academic course.
○ Communicates regularly with Middle School Faculty on all aspects of educational programming setting clear guidelines of faculty expectations.
○ Convenes and leads once-a-cycle meetings of the Lead Teachers; and supports and maintains communication with Lead Teachers and Homeroom Moderators.
○ Convenes quarterly Middle School Faculty meetings in which Middle School faculty are offered the opportunity to present on professional development topics and novel approaches to teaching.
○ Develops policies and guidelines for Homeroom Moderators and provides them with direction and supervision, and administrative support.
○ In collaboration with faculty, Lead Teachers and the Assistant Head of Middle School, oversees the planning of all Middle School facing events (e.g. Back to School Night, Open House, Curriculum Night, Grandparents Day, etc); and keeps the Middle School faculty informed of responsibilities that pertain to various school programs and activities that occur both during and outside of school hours. 2
○ Supports the performance and personal and professional growth of Middle School colleagues through on-going mentoring and professional development opportunities.
○ Establishes programs for the orientation of new Middle School teachers.
○ Facilitates team-building opportunities for teachers to collaborate and share best practices across grade levels and subject areas.
○ Creates an open-door policy where faculty can share concerns. Actively listens to teacher feedback and where appropriate, involve them in decision-making processes.
○ Provides faculty with guidance and expectations for parent-facing communication about student concerns and student learning such as grade reports, interim reports and advisor reflections.
○ Supervises all Middle School personnel and makes annual employment recommendations to the Head of School.
○ Oversee the Middle School After-School Program and supervises the program director.
○ Works with Senior Leadership and Department Chairs in hiring new Middle School personnel.
3. Parent Engagement
○ Responds to inquiries, questions, and concerns of the NCDS Middle School parent community.
○ Cultivates collaborative partnerships with parents that promote the mission of the school and keep parents informed of their child’s progress throughout the course of the academic year.
4. Student Engagement
○ Takes whatever action deemed appropriate to the School’s philosophy when a student’s actions are judged to be clearly contrary to the school’s expectations for behavior. All serious matters should be reported to the Head of School and together determine next steps to be taken.
○ Oversees and supports all aspects of the Middle School student experience, including academics, the arts, athletics, TAG advisory program, retreats, weekly chapel services, student academic services, clubs, DEIB programming and service learning.
○ Oversees the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs in the Middle School and the presentation of school assemblies and programs.
○ Regularly celebrates and recognizes student achievements and improvements.
5. Student Support
○ Participates in grade-level team meetings with all faculty who teach in the Middle School, providing oversight and guidance in student related issues – both academic and social-emotional.
○ Collaborates with the Wellness team to promote the social and emotional health of Middle School students. Oversees the development of social and emotional learning experiences for Middle School students including the TAG Advisory Program.
○ Supervises the MS Learning Support Personnel so that students with academic and/or emotional needs are provided the appropriate scaffolding to support them and their holistic learning needs.
6. Academic Leadership Team
○ Recommends to the Assistant Head of School, and supervises implementation once a decision is determined in the following areas: curriculum sequence, faculty development programs, focus for faculty evaluation and instructional materials and equipment priorities.
○ Recommends to the Head of School/Assistant Head of School and directs implementation once a decision has been reached in the allocation and use of classroom space and equipment.
7. Senior Leadership Team
○ Participates in the strategic planning and leadership of NCDS as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
○ Keeps the Senior Leadership Team informed of the general programs, activities, and concerns of the Middle School.
8. Enrollment Management
○ Coordinates efforts with the Admission and Development Departments to recruit, admit and retain Middle School students, including reading all admission files of prospective Middle School students and attending and speaking at Prospective Family coffees.
○ Coordinates efforts with the Admissions Department in planning the Middle School portion of student-focused admission events, including but not limited to, Open House, Accepted Student revisit days and the New Student Orientation Program.
