Program Information

The Global Action Research Collaborative on Girls’ Education is a comprehensive program that encompasses training, research, writing, and presentations. Fellows are invited to explore intriguing research topics as part of a collegial global cohort of educators. Their work is then shared with the broader girls’ school and girls’ education community and awards are presented to those whose work is particularly innovative.

Training

The 18-month program begins with online training to ensure fellows are well prepared to engage in the work. The training includes an introduction to action research and covers all aspects needed to conduct classroom research and write up findings. Training takes place in monthly meetings with cohort and monthly small group meetings with research advisor. In person workshops are held the weekend prior to the annual conference in June. In addition to the final components of action research training and launching of research study, the cohort-in-training will meet the presenting cohort and attend research presentations.

Research

Fellows design research projects to work with a small research sample, usually one class. Data collection runs over the course of two to three months, from September to November. Educators should look at opportunities where they have frequent, consistent, and predictable meetings with students during these months and should be cognizant of school calendars and student expectations during this period.

Writing and Presentations

Following the conclusion of the research, fellows write up their findings in a series of strategically designed submission blocks that allow for ongoing collaboration and feedback throughout the process. In addition to the written report, fellows also prepare a recorded presentation of their findings, as well as an in-person presentation at the ICGS annual conference, held every June. Fellows complete their in-person training at full weekend workshop and the graduating group present on their findings during this essential professional development and networking event. Registration, travel, and accommodations at this conference are all covered by the fellow’s school and approval needs to be signed off before submitting an application.

Attendance at all training, online and in person, and two consecutive ICGS conferences is a requirement of participation in the program.

Annual Award

The GARC Researcher of the Year award will be given annually to a fellow who has developed a project that is innovative and meaningful and exemplifies genuine and rigorous action research by exploring the research question in detail and arriving at findings that positively contribute to teaching and learning—both in the fellow’s school and in girls’ schools in general. Award recipients will also be actively involved members of the GARC action research community, and they will be recognized for creating research reports that are well-crafted, logical and compelling, incorporating sound data analysis with an engaging delivery.
