Brunch and a Book | Brisbane, Australia
August 10, 2024 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am AEST
Queensland members are warmly invited to join us for Brunch and a Book on Saturday 10 August to explore the following three books:
Your Amazing Teen Brain: CBT and Neuroscience Skills to Stress Less, Balance Emotions, and Strengthen Your Growing Mind by Elisa Nebolsine, with Nicole Walker (St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School).
Nebolsine provides insights to better understand the teenage brain, its neuroplasticity and cognitive behavioural theory. These insights can guide students to recognise emotions and respond to situations in helpful ways. We will unpack ‘brain hacks’ and case studies focusing on strategies educators can implement immediately.
Legitimate Sexpectations: The Power of Sex-Ed by Katrina Marson with Shelley Martin (All Hallows’ School).
As a sexual offences prosecutor, Marson was dismayed by what she observed coming through the court system. She realised that the justice system was not the platform to influence change; instead, the education system held that potential. In our discussion, we will delve into one of the scenarios Marson presents in her book. Together, we will share ideas on how we, as educators, can support young people in crafting a new and positive narrative regarding sex and relationships.
The Anxious Generation – How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt, presented by Emily Whiting (The Glennie School).
Are you curious about what’s behind the rising levels of anxiety among today’s youth? The Anxious Generation dives into the role of social media and how technology has contributed to this trend. This session will look to unpack how we can encourage and support students to make high-character decisions in using technology in a way that will promote their long-term success and wellbeing.
